Scott Hull
Owner, Chief Mastering Engineer
Scott Hull loves music. And he loves a challenge. A 39-year veteran mastering engineer and the owner of Masterdisk studios in Peekskill, New York, Scott started his career in 1983 and has mastered and cut major hit records in every genre, as well as many Grammy-winning titles. He is widely regarded as an expert in vinyl mastering.
Scott Hull started his mastering journey right here at Masterdisk in 1983. He started as an intern, and then became Bob Ludwig's (then chief engineer) assistant and digital editor. In 1994, Scott was named chief engineer at Masterdisk, and was working on major label and independent projects from around the world every day.
In late 2005, Scott opened Scott Hull Mastering, moving his studio and a small crew to the heart of midtown Manhattan and setting up a full-featured, professional mastering facility. But fate unveiled an interesting twist–in June of 2008 Scott purchased Masterdisk mastering studios. He knew the facility and the engineers from working there 10 years before. So who says you can’t go back home again?
For several years, at the studio's 45th street location, Scott not only owned and operated Masterdisk but was also one of the top billing engineers. "A ridiculous endeavor," as Scott puts it now. But he was driven to prove the world wrong.
The studio thrived under his leadership.
"Those first 15 years at Masterdisk seemed to go by in an instant," says Hull. During his tenure, Scott had the honor of mastering the legendary Donald Fagen's Kamakiriad, as well as other highly influential records such as Garbage's 2.0, Shaun Mullins' Lullabye, and Spacehog's In the Meantime.
At that point, Scott decided it was time to strike out on his own. He assembled a room full of analog and digital mastering gear and moved his operation to Classic Sound, where he mastered the Grammy-winning Album of the Year: Steely Dan's Two Against Nature. That first year, Scott also mastered John Mayer's Room For Squares.
As rent began to skyrocket in Manhattan, Masterdisk had to move, and Scott had to rethink everything. Peekskill, New York, a former industrial port town on the Hudson River, became Masterdisk's new home. Scott began rebuilding and revitalizing the Masterdisk name while serving all of his international artists as before. As a bonus, this new facility allowed Scott to expand and pursue his dream of opening a recording studio to accompany Masterdisk's mastering and vinyl operation.
Scott reflects, "It's been six years now since Masterdisk made the move to Peekskill, and I have to say that it was a very good decision. I'm closer to home, I have a view of the Hudson river out my studio window, and the town is very full of life and creativity."
These days, Scott–and Masterdisk–are working on amazing and interesting new music every day.
